  4.     Few fans of the embattled New York Yankees are inclined to
  5. be merciful toward the team's loudmouthed and intrusive owner,
  6. George Steinbrenner. But last week Steinbrenner was officially
  7. forgiven and rehabilitated by an old sportscaster -- Ronald
  8. Reagan. In one of his last official acts as President, Reagan
  9. pardoned Steinbrenner for illegally funneling $100,000 to
  10. Richard Nixon's 1972 presidential re-election campaign, for
  11. which the boss had been fined $15,000 and banned from the
  12. Yankees' management for 15 months. Said Steinbrenner, who is
  13. better known for berating players and managers than offering
  14. thanks: "I am very grateful."
